Cabinet Gives Nod To 6 New IIT Permanent Campus, 5669 Seats To Be Added Once Functional
The central government cabinet has approved over Rs 7,000 crore for construction of permanent campuses of six new Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) across the country. They are allotted for completion of phase 1 of proposed infrasturcture. Till date these IITs functioning from the campuses of established IITs or renowned institutions. According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), about Rs 20,304 crore were required for the construction of the permanent campuses over a period of seven years. Hon'ble HRD minister informed the public via the tweet in which he stated that "6 new IITs announced by the Modi Government in 2014-15 and 2015-16 to get their permanent campuses". 6 new IITs announced by the Modi Government in 2014-15 and 2015-16 to get their permanent campuses #ExpansionofIITSystem pic.twitter.com/K1ppUhO3yJ The 6 IITs whose whose studenst future is going to take a spin are: As of now, these IITs can accomadate a total strength of 1,530 students. and after completetion of phase 1, this strength will go up to 7,200. Academic sessions of the IITs at Tirupati and Palakkad started in 2015-16 and at Dharwad, Bhilai, Jammu and Goa in 2016-17 from their respective temporary campuses, as mentioned above. The official release mentioned that The Union Cabinet on October 24, 2017 approved a Rs 7,002 crore plan for construction of permanent campuses for six new IITs, to be completed by March 31, 2020.
